Most of us have noticed that there seems to be something different and better about the team this year that we have not seen for some years. There have also been a number of comments on a number of threads regarding our relative position and form in relation to previous years.
I thought it would be useful to make an evidence-based comparison for each year we have been in the Football League. With luck, I will try to update the table each week to allow us to see where we stand against previous Crawley teams/managers.
I have included in bold the season(s) which represented our best performance to that week.
Looking at the figures, at present we have had our best start in terms of goals scored, goal difference, points and position in six years.
However, we must read this with caution. We are still at the stage of the season where a couple of results either way can result in big changes in league position but so far, so good.
Thanks for the stats still early days and the one things that doesnt surprise me is our current Goals for and against as ive always felt so long as we score more than we let in - of course that's stating the obvious to win a match - but what i mean is we often look like conceding but equally capable of scoring.
Good idea. Of course, the other unknown without researching is the quality of the teams played early in the season as that is highly variable. It will probably make more sense around half way, because we are likely to have played each team once.

Exactly. This is always a moveable feast - the data has to remain subjective. The better we do, the fewer teams above us we play, the harder it becomes to assess the variability in a meaningful sense. Conversely, the opposite is true if we do badly but it allows us a snapshot at any given time and a defined comparison to previous seasons.
I have updated the comparison table following the battling but exciting win on Saturday. Defeats in season 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 in this week means that we have currently had the best start to a season at this stage in the Football League. Although we are in the same league position as seasons 2011-2012 and 2012-2013, we have one more point than both of those seasons.
Still early days of course and a lot can happen very quickly at this stage of the season but so far our best season in the Football League, by some considerable distance, compared to some other seasons.
This must be tempered of course with the fact that we were in League One for three of those seasons.
