My points on yesterdays game and general team observations..
1. We played higher up the pitch & were closing down Portsmouth defenders preventing them from playing out from the back. Unlike last season when we sat deeper and let the opposition pass it around in our half.
2. For me Bulman must be captain. He leads by example as well as talks to the players around him organising positioning etc and his effort was definately rubbing off on the other players. He also showed his fitness and kept going the full 90 mins, must have covered more ground than any other player on the pitch! so no worries in that department.
3. Verheydt impressed. He imposed his physical presence at set pieces and has an awareness around him laying of quick passes accurately and also worked hard closing down. Pleased he got his first goal for the club.
3. Randall linked up well with Bully and looks composed on the ball. Passing was assured and looks to play forward and gets his tackles in. Also good to have a 6 footer in midfield to have a more physical presence there.
4. Roberts and Boldewijn have plenty of skill and pace and both being young will i'm sure go from strength to strength. Looking for both to have a big impact this season. Hopefully Roberts can stay clear of injury this time around and show his true potential.
5. Yorwerth has the potential to be a very good player. Just needs to keep his head when being provoked. Also to learn that at times to clear the ball rather than take chances at the back. Good to have a defender with pace and quick feet to get us out of trouble when gaps appear at the back.
6. Connolly is a winner and shows his passion. Dependable and experienced leading and organising at the back. Just needs to be careful giving away free kicks in dangerous areas. There are times he just needs to stand the oppo player up rather than be to eager to get to the ball through the back of players.
7. Young has the pace necessary for a wing back / full back. Has improved his defending but when he gets forward he must look to improve his distribution whether passing or crossing.
8. Evina looks a decent left back. Has pace going forward and good on the ball.
9. Lelan is the only player in yesterdays starting line up that concerns me. Lacks the composure and gives the ball away in dangerous areas to often.
10. We are lucky to have Morris in goal. Full Stop. Just hope he remains injury free throughout the season. Might be in trouble otherwise.
