Having watched him play many times for Wales I believe he was a very underrated player He was astounding at breaking up play and doing the ugly stuff very well He played the panto villain brilliantly, but he also played football rather well too
I was more surprised to read that Stockport are in the tenth tier. It doesn't seem an eternity ago that they were in the old Fourth Division. I thought he was a decent player in the role that he played. He was never going to be a silky-smooth playmaker (though he did come up with the odd pass), but if you were in the back four he's the sort of destroyer you'd want in front of you. I've never forgotten Tubbs knobbling him in THAT game. I thought Tubbsy was going to see red but the ref bottled it and he got away with a yellow. I booed with everyone else when Savage was substituted, but it's hard to boo and laugh at the same time - the booing was good natured and I have a lot of respect for Savage.

It's Stockport Town rather than County, who are currently in the National League.

Oops! Thanks for that. I thought the fall from grace seemed rather rapid. I assumed a financial problem plus reformation
