Sad news breaking today that our former player and manager Brian Sparrow has died, aged just 57. Played for us in the 1990/91 season before a serious injury effectively ended his playing career and he was appointed manager in May 1991. Took us to the FA Cup second round for the first time ever with that famous victory over Northampton, then went one better by winning at Hayes to reach the third round, where we lost to Brighton.
Left to go to Wimbledon a month later, but returned for a short second spell as manager in late 1996. Coached at Palace (who he’d played for in the 1980s) and at Brentford, and later locally at Lingfield Rangers.
So glad that he made it to the Broadfield Stadium both as a former players’ guest and when the team that beat Northampton were reunited for the league match with them in November 2015.
Really shocked to hear this. Those were great days, a cracking cup run in the days where we weren't throwing money around. I remember the Goldstone like it was yesterday.
Nice man Brian, only man I have ever kissed (just outside boardroom at Hayes after one of my all time favourite Crawley games, that 2nd goal in front of massed Crawley fans - magic moment!!). Also remember how devastated he was after our loss to Brighton, blamed himself for team selection. RIP Brian.
