As said earlier with Grego-Cox, it is a chance for Matthews to show what he can do, if he intends to be a first team player next year, he needs to do well in the national League where he will hopefully be given lots of game time. If not, would we take that 1 year?
I'm Not the greatest Mathews fan and losing Grego Cox to me was worse but to lose both in a week means one of two things We really cant afford to pay them or we don't need them - if its the latter then we'd better not hear one more moan about injuries and a having a small squad of fit players. As many of you will have seen, I am a great Yems supporter and think he is a real asset to club but the moment he says injuries are killing us then the question back has to be why did we let this pair go.
I think a rational explanation is we are a lowly funded club in League 2 and any manager we have, Yems or anyone else, may have to make decisions on the future of some players in order to bring other players in next season. We lose a lot of money a year and it’s surprising to me that our financial situation doesn’t always temper the ambitions of fans.
Realistically, we are safe from relegation and don’t quite have what it takes to make top 7. Time for planning I reckon
Fair point Steve - wouldn't expect much to be different in a years time though as where we are is success in my eyes - anywhere that means we stay in league 2 is a positive and being far enough above the bottom two and not needing to look back is great
I don't think the first 4 will get a new deal, I was quite surprised that German got a 1 year extension last year and my mate at Dulwich where he was on loan said he made 2 sub appearances while there.
Of the rest I think Craig, Tunnicliffe, Davis, Hess and Appiah deserve a new deal. Not sure Frost has done enough (2 goals 4 assists over 2 years), although he has been injured and does have age on his side. Nadesan has been a great servant but is completely reliant on quality balls without which he vanishes, good impact player but worth a new deal?
Matthews and Greco-Cox will not get match fit as they are not first choice starters at the moment. I think it is an opportunity to show the manager what they can do. Matthews is a busy player but his output and decision making need to improve, 1 goal and 5 assists for Crawley in his total time at the club can't be enough for an attacking player.
I think the club are looking at all players now, to work out who stays and who goes whilst giving them a fair chance to prove themselves. At the moment, fully fit, playing with a back 3 , 2 wing backs, 2 central midfielders, that leaves 3 attacking positions, 2 of which are taken by Nichols and Appiah. That final position can't easily be shared by 4-5 players. So loan gives them a chance to show.
G-C played 75 mins against Kings Lynn and 90 mins against Torquay (1 assist) Matthews has played 90 mins against bottom side Dover. Had one chance and skied it. I think they need to prove they can really influence games.
At this moment in time if I was in charge I'd do the following
Offer new contract: Tunnicliffe Davies Appiah Seymour
Coaching role: Craig (think he will stop playing after this season)
50/50 (depends on fitness and what they do in next couple of months): Grego-Cox Frost
Get rid of: Battle Nadesan Jones Adebowale Khaleel Al-Hussaini Marshall Burnett Matthews German
The 4 I want to keep on are there because of their current importance to the team or future potential. If Craig does decide to carry on playing I'd still have him around mainly for off-pitch influence reasons, perhaps could combine it with a coaching role. If RGC does very well at Barnet he could be a valuable asset to the squad next term and will definitely be worth keeping. Feel Frost might get more time to show us what he can do from now until May and I have seen glimpses of him that suggest he could be a very good player at this level, but we will wait and see. The ones in my last category unfourtunately are not good enough for this level in my opinion and moving them on will enable us to hopefully get those couple of top notch players we need in order to launch a promotion bid next season
Again sort of makes sense nut I would hope a few of the fringe players may have shown something in training to warrant further effort to bring them up to the standard we need. Huge changes of staff every year are not a recipe for growth but can see exactly where you are coming from
Morris, Craig, Tunnicliffe, Lynch, Ludwig, Tsroulla, Davis, Francomb, Hessenthaler, Nichols and Appiah. These are our decent players.
MUST stays are Morris, Craig, Tunnicliffe, Lynch, Nichols and Appiah. Losing any one of those players would be a big blow.
IMO our 2 most important players are Nichols and Morris. The management need to convince Glenn to stay on as it could unravel badly next season if A he leaves/ retires or B we don’t replace him with a decent goalie.
Powell, Payne, Nadesan reasonable players. Keep them if we can’t afford any better.
Jury’s still out on Frost, Tilley, Oteh, Matthews and Grego-Cox all of these players could easily leave or stay maybe.
Ferry and Hutchinson look half decent, but will probably leave at the end of the season as they are on loan.
Bansal-McNulty will probably leave as he is in loan as well.
The rest are just making up the numbers.
With that core of 11 decent players and a few decent squad additions we will easily stay up next season again and can finish in the top half. If a few of them leave and if we don’t recruit well we could struggle.

Think Alex is just about on the money here - I would prefer a bit of quality in squad than huge churn
I may be a minority here but I really hope we keep Nadesan. I can’t remember if it was Brian Clough but it was some great luminary anyway who said there is no substitute for pace. No doubt he’s trod water this year but I do feel another team would do a John Akinde with him if we let him go. Not that he’s the type to bang in 20+ like BJA but he can be unplayable when on song, for me the best football I’ve seen us play this season was the first half at Exeter when he was utterly dominant. But a player who needs a lot of management patience, I hope Yems has it

I kind of agree, when he's on it he really is on it. He can beat just about anyone for pace but has no composure in front of goal. What's the point in beating your man when majority of the time there is no end product. He could be amazing at assists, but as he's playing on the shoulder there's often no-one to pass to. If the opposition are clued up on his strengths, he's almost invisible and we play with 10 men. Sadly to me he's a one trick pony.

To be fair to Nadesan, he really took his chance today, didn't start but made a real impact.
