Well it’s taken me a couple of days to digest the game from Saturday
It was both a disappointing result and performance, especially given the back to back previous wins and the hope that we could really go on a good run and break into the play off spots as I feel at least one spot is definitely up for grabs.
Salford came with a new manager which you half expect to produce a “new manager bounce” and they did seem “up for it” right from the off and with Matt Smith a huge focal point for them I did wonder if we could physically cope with him as we don’t generally appear to have the league two nastiness of a number of other league two teams when it comes to physical battles.
Salford were direct and although we repelled some of their attacks we never got a foothold in the game to take the pressure off the back line as we gave our passes away and never won many second balls from our clearances. The first 20 minutes it was one way traffic and Corey was seriously overworked, though did well to deny Salford the lead.
We didn’t pass it like we normally do and we don’t have the right type of players to play a long ball game in the Salford/Bradford way so it didn’t leave much but to hope we could stay in the game and nick a point and still forge ahead with a little unbeaten run. There appears no middle ground with this squad, win or lose with only 3 draws this season.
There are plenty of Corey critics on the internet but I’m not really one of them, he does good things he does bad things, just like many league two keepers and I feel with more experience he will get better so I’m prepared to be patient and even his hardened negative suitors surely can’t deny he was man of the match by a country mile.
For me this game once again highlighted that for me I feel we need a target man to offer a different threat to Orsi in games like this where we can’t seem to play our possession based style, someone we can play into, who will hold the ball up and allow us to get up the pitch and get on the end of a cross when we deliver.
I also feel we need some more steel in a centre back and centre mid who can assert some physical authority during the nitty gritty battles of a league two game in the middle of winter on muddy pitches where the beautiful game isnt so beautiful
Lastly in an attacking sense whether it be directly up front or in a wide area, some real pace to cause opposition problems.
Will we see much recruitment though, given it’s halfway through the window and with a lack of money at our disposal, well, I have very worrying doubts which I think would be unfair on SL who has done a pretty solid job overall in his time but needs support from above if we are to kick on in the second half of the season.
