i think it speaks volumes that are bench is much stronger than last season yet it still most of the subs doesn't look good enough at this level, but with our budget can we afford a bench full of quality L2 players?
I don't know what more Palmer could have done to get the sponsor's MOM award. He scored both goals, was a constant threat and dominated their two central defenders despite being isolated up front and ran his socks off.My worry is that other teams will notice this and look to sign him in January-there was a thread on the southend forum suggesting this.Without him our prospects look very bleak. I also cannot understand why the manager changed 50% of the defence to bring in two players who had not played for some time.N'Gala seemed hesitant and off the pace and Doherty apart from one run and pass that led to our second goal, had a nightmare-their winger constantly went past him as if he wasn't there.
Disappointing, as it was a good effort to get back to 2-2. Once you start chasing the game it can always be difficult. However the wait for a Cup win goes on - was Ipswich really the last time we won a FAC or League Cup game?
Two main issues, clearly. 19 goals conceded in 6 games (and that excludes the SSC), and if Olly Palmer doesn't score we are struggling for goals. It's not as if we have much strength in depth on the bench either.
3 points on Saturday and a clean sheet would help steady the ship.
I'm unclear where the club is going at the moment, drifting in mid table, out of all the cups, and little sign of our owner either. It will be interesting to see if we get another of his 'Crawley Family' messages but to be honest we have gone from Yates to Drummy to Kewell to Cioffi with pretty much the same end result.
On the other hand if we can stay in mid table and out of trouble that will be OK for a club the size of ours.
This says it all...

Not that we are great in the middle..however not much to sort out Gabby then as ive repeatedly said our defence are not good enough and we are overly reliant on OP. You have a job to do Gabby. Are you up to it?

I think it's a certainty that Palmer will go in January he is constantly in the top two Div 2 highest goalscorers, I just hope the management are planning life without him.

He will only go if the club choose to sell him. He is under contract. I know we are a selling club but I really don't see the board cashing in halfway through the season, and screwing any chance the team has of staying up. If we get a decent offer in the summer he may well go, but isn't he having his best ever season, goal-wise, with us? He might like being a big fish in a small pond (and one of our 3 best players).

Southend had a fair bit of luck with their first two goals. Ok should have been more switched on at the back but that's the difference with a decent league one team and us.
The BBC highlights look good if stopped at 1 minute 15 seconds and the commentary of the equaliser is quite something to listen to.
Two great finishes where would we be without him.
Onto Saturday and a win against Crewe is so important for our season.
I dunno what to say about that - we were abject in the first half and abject in extra time. How with 4 subs Doherty survived the full 120 is amazing, he cost us the win against Exeter (that moment when everything has gone wrong for Cioffi) and put in one of the most sub par left back displays I’ve ever seen in a Reds shirt tonight.
Cioffi has to sort out the weak links in defence or this season will head south pretty quickly
Don't think Doughty was helped by Francome being played wide left, Cioffi has been doing a lot of tinkering,Francome has been a right back, wide right, central midfield now wide left, would Gambin who is naturally left side not have provided better balance and put Francome on the right? ,By all accounts big Joe had a good game in the first match but N'Gala who has missed the last five games and for me looked way off the pace was preferred. We do seem to play a lot of passes square lately but as Palmer showed last night from Doughtys excellent pass attacking through the centre should be used more.

Is he?! I thought his 8 league goals this season was his highest ever tally. No certainty he’ll go, club just have to reject any bids if they get them.

Agree, whilst Doherty did make mistakes he did set up the goal and really wasn’t helped by those around him.I’ve said for a while now I think Francoomb isn’t that great, Ngala didn’t look fit and was caught out of position and francoomb lost possession regularly and didn’t track back which i think is partly why they always doubled up on Doherty in the lead up to the goals on the left. How MOM wasn’t Ollie Palmer I have no idea. Gambin put in a good shift despite playing International football very recently.Defensive training for the next few days I would hope.
How did he cost us the win against Exeter? Came from a mess up with a short-corner and they broke away, not sure how Doherty was culpable.
Erm he was the last defender - he leapt in to make the interception, missed and allowed the goal scorer a free run on goal. Either staying goal side to track/hamper the run or even a professional foul would have nullified the goal threat
My slightly calmer thoughts now are that Southend did have a big stroke of luck with the borderline sending off at 2-2. While most fans prefer the leeway to the tackler the Southend player did appear to be out of control with his lunge and that is often enough for red these days.
Whether we would have gone on to win against 10 men is another matter but it was a key turning point the later massacre hid a little bit

Ollie Palmer ticks every box, he is a one-man forward line...
...based on the reported figure for James Collins, I would not let him leave for less than half-a-million...
..which means that there are only a very few L1 & Championship clubs who would be in a financial position to take a gamble on him... Hopefully they will think it is a gamble too far, cross fingers..!

I think it will be determined by our league position if we keep sliding down the table he will go,if we are close to the playoffs and the squad is strengthened he'll stay.

I thought it was an easy red. And they had a huge stroke of luck with the second goal - a foul which should have been given and it looked like he was going to book the player the next time the ball went dead. But instead it ended in the net and he'd lost the chance to go back and book the player
