I'm old enough to remember the 70 world cup and that save but the thing that always struck me about Banks's goalkeeping was how he always seemed to be in the right place. Obviously he could pull it the spectacular when needed but most of the time it was just being there. Ever since, when I look at keepers, it's not the flashy stuff that convinces me but the right spot right time ability.

Very difficult to follow tributes above, absolutely agree the word "Legend" can be overused but certainly not in Gordon Banks name. I think what he did for me was say football is not just about scoring goals but its about all parts of the game including goalkeeping and that save was sensational. RIP
Yes, R.I.P. Gordon Banks. I only ever saw him play once, in this game englandstats.com/matches.php?mid=399 I did finally get to meet him last year - he and Geoff Hurst did a show down in Worthing. He had awful trouble getting there because the car that was bringing him had mechanical problems. But he still showed up after a long day on the road. I thought that was good going for an 80 year old. Yes, his sense of humour was intact too. A good evening. Sorry he won't be around any more.
