Poor Robert Smith, the forgotten man of that fantastic Southern League campaign....terrible injury sustained up at Stafford??? A very good footballer, such a shame. A wonder if Robbie still works as a car parking asssistant?
Robert Smith was a key player for The Reds that season.
After getting seriously injured at Marston Road, I don't think he ever played again. My lasting memory of him was waving his crutches in the air at Park View Road, Welling the sunny day we clinched the Southern League title and promotion to The Conference.
The sad thing is, Crawley Town FC made no reference to his injury lay-off, rehabilitation or retirement whatsoever.

Exactly that,John.....forgotten by the club but not,it would appear by us supporters..
Rob Kember appointed manager of Chipstead with Robert Smith as his assistant.

Describes himself on Twitter as a "posh builder". And Robert describes himself as "ex pro, ex semi-pro, now full time cripple".

He was an exceptional player that season, he and Paul Armstrong were brilliant in central midfield. We thought Jay Richardson would partner Armstrong, but then Smith came along on trial and ended up keeping Richardson and Peter Fear out of the side until he got injured in the February.
Those of us that watched Robert Smith in that season always say he should have been playing league football. Now I have watched league football I would say he was a league one player.
Don't think Shamir is up to this level, I think getting released by relegated National League Aldershot confirms that shame because he is a local lad, who I have played against at youth level myself, but I don't think he's up to this level sadly.

Agreed, local lad but not league quality, unless you are using the John Gregory scale.
Saw the Eastbourne 6-0 on Saturday and Serge was playing the defensive deeper midfielder position as recently analysed on another thread! And very well he did too, very nice classy touches if not the flaring breaks we used to see. Still probably some football left in him yet. Bought the DVD.
Dean Cox was not in the 16 and I didn’t find out why.
