A couple of times in recent weeks I've seen a player on the same side as the goalkeeper play the ball before it's left the penalty area. Has the rule changed to allow this, or were they just refs who weren't so bothered about it?

Sorry to be pedantic Paul, but they are Laws not rules !!😜
In all honesty, the Law of the game has always been implemented by the eagle eyed match officials, however, I think this is becoming another ploy to waste time as opposed to taking the ball to the corner flag in the opponent’s half.

I have read about 'the rule of law', but didn't realise it was about football
Thanks for the link. Some interesting changes there, but it seems to be getting more and more complex.
I think the governing body may have used the women's game as a pilot, because the two occasions I saw the ball being played in the area from a goal kick were both in women's football.
