Not at the point where I think Gab should go just yet, unless someone like Tisdale were possible, but he's got to do a lot better.
There have been some green shoots of a developing side this season, particularly in the cup games, but then we get brought back down to earth by disconnected performances and stupid goal after stupid goal conceded. Before yesterday we had the joint worst defensive record in the league, only Carlisle conceding twice meant that we still don't. To be so leaky at the back despite having one of the league's best goalkeepers points to a problem with the system. Tunnicliffe and Dallison have their brainfarts, but individually aren't terrible, but they often seem to find themselves isolated. Considering we have an Italian centre back as our manager, you would think we'd have a bit more nous when it comes to shape at the back. If anything, we might have the worst defensive shape in the whole Football League (certainly worse than Morecambe's).
There's the obvious issue of not having any midfielders too, so Gab keeps having to play the same three regardless of fitness and form. Whoever decided to deliberately handicap ourselves like that needs to give their head a wobble.
Then there's the strikers. We have three good strikers (well, two and Bloomfield) who all have very different styles. So why is it that we always seem to play the same way regardless of who is up top? If anything, it seems like we actually play more long balls when Nadesan is up front than we do when Palmer is.
We have some fantastic talent in this squad, and it should be performing much better in the league. Sustainability is an obvious goal, and a valid one of course, but you won't get people through the gates if they're checking the results from their nice warm home in mid-November and seeing that we only drew 1-1 with the team bottom of the league. The appalling performance against Colchester did a lot of damage in terms of the fairweather fans, so it could be that this season is a write off for getting the gates up. Given relegation is unlikely, planning for 2020-21 has to start now. Whether that's with this manager or someone else, we can't keep this rinse, repeat nonsense going for much longer, or sooner or later we'll be back in non-league.
As said, we have actually put together a pretty talented young squad, but there's still some gaping holes in it. We desperately need a leader at centre back, and a proper defensive midfielder to allow Bully to rest every now and again, Jimmy Smith back, and an established way of attacking that gets the best out of our strikers, rather than just picking whoever and hoping for the best.
Early season optimism has gone, and the magnifying glass is well and truly on Cioffi now. He needs to show why it is that he managed to get the gig in the first place, and more the point, why he deserves to keep it.
