Not sure if it's the weird weather but there seems to be a lot of Football League pitches looking in a bad way at the moment.
playing havoc at grass roots too (literally!) I know it will bring on the 3g 4g 5h 6i 7j whatever plastic pitch debate, but for me, football needs to be played on grass, especially at football league and above level.
There was a good reason why back when my belly was flat, UK teams relied on scrapping for the ball in midfield, launching it long & quick... and not much else...
...football was played on ploughed fields... improvements in technique & tactics were made possible because of advances to the condition of the playing surface (lightweight boots without 2" studs has also helped).
We could easily lose entire months during a cold spell, but there was still unlikely to be a single blade of grass on it once it had thawed.
Yes the pitch is looking a bit ropey, but it is still vegetated & not that long ago we would have cancelled fixtures during the recent deluge.
What i cannot fathom... is the obsession with turning the sprinklers on during match days regardless of the weather conditions...(?) Particularly as i was told the main factor a few years ago in why the surface was in such poor condition, was a fatal combination of poor drainage & over watering...!
Other countries have the luxury of knowing with a degree of confidence when cold & snow is due & can organise a winter break accordingly. It is a brave person who would try & 2nd guess when our local weather outlook becomes inclement.
