I wish I’d seen Gregory and Robbins as their statistics are exceptional, and don’t forget they were playing 50/60 games a season with all the cup competitions. Scored in all of the competitions, but most importantly at a remarkable rate in the league as well. In fact, since Robbins in 1985/6, only two players have scored 20 or more league goals in a season...
For the record, Tubbs was terrific, how I imagine the above two to have been, with Charlie Mac right up there as well, 17 goals in an injury-hit promotion-winning season, with 9 in 7 (scoring in all 7) when it mattered in the run-in, very close between those two.
Gregory wasn't so easy to fathom. He seemed a bit short on pace and his overall ball control wasn't so great, but he was one of those strikers who had a knack of knowing how to be in the right place, so I suppose he compensated for other shortcomings by having a keen sense of anticipation. Let's face it, if he were great on all counts he would not have been playing in the Southern League, or whatever the sponsors were calling it back then (Beazer Homes?). He could be quite a grafter and wasn't shy about helping to defend when occasion demanded.
Tubs and Barnet were fab, McDonald (left for better pickings at St. Albans) was a power house, but Waters and Nadesan are a step above them all in my view.
That was Nic McDonnell who left for St Albans, as opposed to Charlie MacDonald, just to be clear.
Hard to say really. We have had some good forwards down the years. In the time I have been watching the following stand out.
David Boyce Craig Whittington Joff Vansittart Ben Abbey Charlie McDonald Daryl Clare Charlie Ademeno Jon-Paul Pittman Scott Rendell Guy Madjo Matt Tubbs Jamie Cook Tyrone Barnett Rhys Murphy Karlan Grant James Collins
The worst - probably a toss up between Emile Sinclair and Thomas Verheydt. Two of the best pub players I have seen.

get yourself down to specsavers mate - if thats stand out you really are easily pleased. Pittman pmsl, Murphy pmsl, and Verheydt was injured so cannot be properly judged.

Not only that ,but I wonder what they would have been like on todays standard of playing surface... Town mead was mud and sand for 4 months a season..
Its a hard choice and what do you base it on? Goals scored, longevity or nice legs?
Joking aside.
Charlie Mcdonald, James Collins and Wes Thomas are the three, who we held the contracts for, who have played the highest after playing for us (Ahern-Grant was on loan). David Speedie played the highest before playing for us. So, going by what the rest of football thinks, they have to be our best.
Strange how I wouldn't choose either of them.
Terry Robins for me. Just a great forward who scored goals and worried defenders.

I feel honoured to have witnessed his only goal for Crawley. Shrewsbury away on a Tuesday night. There was a conversation with the stewards that if he scored we would all invade the pitch. He took his goal very well, but the stewards looked very worried.

Lee Barnard? Dom Poleon?
Poleon was indeed one if not the worst. I think Barnard had average and bad days if I remember correctly.

I thought it was official Emile Sinclair was the king stinker and cost us £100k as well, it wasnt just his complete ignorance of where the goal is, he also couldnt win a header or hold up the ball.

Did he cost us at all? I had the impression that Posh still owed us money for Tyrone so palmed him off on us in lieu of that. Happy to be corrected on that though. As somebody who has been watching Crawley for a bit longer, I would add Phil Basey and Eric Whitington to Simon's list. Eric has to be in with a shout for my all time favourite Crawley player. I think Barnyard was the most disappointing. For somebody who scored goals in the Premier League he showed very little of that ability for us. I saw his only goal for us at Yeovil and even that was an accident.
