What a game. Controlled, comfortable and dominant, this was thoroughly deserved. A complete contrast to Friday and you could see the players were up for it from the start.
A number of changes to the line up. Good to see Nick start and great to see Dion back. Cool, composed and in control for the whole time he was on the pitch.
What a start though. An early corner, we were all settling down and blimey, it was in the net!! 1-0 in the first minute. I think a few of our fans missed it and nobody knew who had scored but it didn't matter.
That was just the start. Although Newport then passed the ball around quite nicely, they only threatened once, when Corey pulled off a great save from a one on one.
Other than that we were in control but no real clear cut chances - until Darcy picked the ball up, made some space and put the ball in the corner of the net. Very good goal and the reds fans were in great voice.
Some on here have said they looked threatening a few times in the first half but it didn't look like it to us.
The referee in the first half was a bit annoying. He was giving nearly every point of contact as a foul and almost all of them to Newport!
Second half carried on where the first ended, fully in control and we were even more dominant and drove the game to them.
The third goal looked very odd. The ball was floated in, it looked for all the world to be a comfortable gather for the keeper but he hesitated and a completely unmarked Maguire beautifully finished the move.
We had other chances as well, a Lolos cross shot went just wide and we buzzed around the area without getting a clear cut shot in.
In added time, Adam was completely unmarked in the middle to easily convert a cross. 4-0 and as easy as you like.
Corey was untroubled throughout other than the one real save he had to make where he did extremely well.
The whole back line was relatively untroubled, with Dion and Jay outstanding. Nick and Kellen powered forward and were behind a lot of our good moves, while Jeremy Kelly probably had his best game for us so far. Will Wright spent a lot of time in midfield and was a great driving force.
Up front, Lolos had quite a quiet game but did some great work holding the ball up and bringing others into the game. Orsi did well and his close control looked a lot better than on Friday.
All the subs contributed well, especially Adam whi grabbed a well taken goal.
Overall, Newport offered little and with three of their normal first team defenders missing, they looked very poor at the back. They were decent in the midfield but had nothing to offer up front.
A great day out, a great result. Hugely enjoyable. Very well done to all the players and to Scott and of course to the non-stop energy and contribution from the Red Army!!
This team just keeps on achieving and not giving up.
Excelling themselves again and again.
Think we’ve always had the ability in the players to get results, but amongst the amazing things SL and his staff have managed to do is to get the players to have much more confidence in themselves and swagger.
Not sure they've always properly believed they could be up there at the end of the season, but now they’ve actually really started to believe, our results have improved big style. Let’s keep it going lads.
and so the merry go round plays on. Down on Friday then up today. Who knows what will come. Wallsalls late win means we have little or no leeway if they get a win and we lose but I still think we will probably win some we dont expect and lose some we would expect so hold onto your hats its going to be a bumpy ride.
