Not one to be negative, but struggling to see the point of this exercise. Will cost us the price of a few solid first - teamers, and what are we really likely to generate out of it?

test players out outside first team. We may find the odd gem and they might even make a better impression in SSC
Dunno if it is a daft question... but is there a competitive league or cup competition for U23 teams..?
There is but not at our level. There's Premier League 2 for Category 1 teams, and the PL Professional Development League for Category 2 teams.
Seem to remember it was reported when we mooted this was going to happen that we'd be playing friendlies initially against other Football League teams. Presumably the idea is to build it up over time and eventually become Cat 2, or like every other time give up on it altogether.
I like the ambition and intent of it though, especially giving them their own qualified coach and physio. Had this vision of one of the players' dads being roped in to do it.
I can only presume, with the offer of open trials, that we are hoping to pick up some players who have been released by PL / Championship clubs and are just looking to stay in the game and work back up.
There the SSC the paint trophy as competition in addition to friendlies.
only a few U23s would be allowed to play in the paint trophy as most of the selected 16 must have played in the previous league game,
i think its a maximum of 5 players who didn't play in the last game can be selected but one of the forum members will be able to correct me if incorrect

Some League One and Two clubs were fined this season for fielding "weakened teams", but changes have been made to allow for greater selection flexibility for clubs.
Third-tier and fourth-tier clubs are now able to choose any goalkeeper and only four starting outfield players now have to be "qualifying first-team players", while invited sides need to have six under-21 players in their starting line-up.
Ps. Our stadium sponsors might appreciate us calling it the Checkatrade Trophy.
Hey Jersey; we went through this in the old forum.
The wording is very complicated but it basically boils down to meaning we have to have an 18 year old signed for us this season who will be part of the match day squad next.

didnt Brian Clough famously obce say something about football being uncomplicated and you just stuck the ball in the net.
Maybe we should just ignore the paint trophy and hope it and Shaun Harvey go away. As an aside and related to the issues surrounding boycott of JPT as a protest against clubs seeking PL blood money to allow their quest for global domination to continue, I noticed Dutch 2nd Division Verheydt plays in now has four reserve sides of big clubs. In fact Ajax reserves came 2nd last year. Totally devalues the league imo.

I seem to recall that the dates announced for the U23 trials were July 12 and 19, OK I don't actually recall the dates at my age, I looked them up .... anyone hear if they went ahead?
