Proud winners of the 1991 (I checked) AGM cup. Beating Rushden Town in the final. I'm old I go back before the conference days.
If I recall correctly Rushden were denied promotion due to the ground grading. Shortly after Grigg came in and merged them with Diamonds and they became Rushden and Diamonds and sailed up the leagues.
Ahhh, but wouldn’t have been the Conference AGM Cup. You’re correct, we finished in the relegation zone but Rushden Town who finished in 14th were relegated due to their ground hit grim up to sufficient grading, and two clubs were denied promotion on the same grounds, think it it was Stourbridge and Buckingham.
In my memory I recall just how crap we were that year and how the players needed to be cleared out and a whole new squad brought in. Then I look at the squad list....?
Going to the other extreme, just how many times did the horrible club on the hill, Forest Green Rovers, avoid being relegated due to another Team’s troubles?
If I remember correctly , I’m sure that excuse for a Football Club had a member of their Board holding a position within the Conference Board.
Somehow, you just knew, that if they finished rock bottom, they would be reprieved.

I think this was actually a bit of a myth, yes there were a number of seasons when the sides in the relegation zone didn’t all get relegated, but it wasn’t always Forest Green that benefitted.
2004/5 was one season when they did, while in 2005/6 they finished outside the bottom 2, but Altrincham had 18 points deducted, otherwise they’d have finished above FGR who’d have gone down. Can’t remember if the deduction was applied during or after the season though.
As I said, I couldn't remember exactly, but they did seem to be the club with nine lives. They made the most of it, definitely. I see they have had planning permission refused for their all-wooden stadium.
