I've always thought he was overrated, he did a reasonable job at Everton, but never actually won anything, don't think he ever even made the champions league at Everton. He was hailed as 'the chosen one' at Man U but was unsurprisingly not good enough, he doesn't have that winning mentality needed to survive at a club as big as Man U.
To be fair, Sunderland have been appalling for several years and it's been a long time coming for them to go down they can't keep doing their great escape every year, eventually the black cats used up their 9 lives!

He did make the champions league and was an outstanding manager for them - net spend of nothing over 11 years. And he's a superb bloke too. I met him loads during my time at Preston when he was manager there. Always accomodating and incredibly helpful.
Was his time at Man U any less successful than Van Gaal or Jose - I'd still say the jury is out - I think United panicked - they didn't give him either the resources or time that they tolerated Van Gaal or Jose for. We will never know.
Real Socided was an error but Sunderland was a basket case from day one. And save for an injury to Pickford or Defoe he might have even got away with it
