I can even still recall back in the day, Sepp Blatter being asked to name his favourite Qatar player and replying "Jimi Hendrix"
That is the type of terrace humour that was so desperately missing during the various lockdowns! Although I have read that Blatter and others on various FIFA committees prefer the fiddle to the guitar. Allegedly.
Anyway, when all this happens I'm hoping England get Germany, South Korea and Canada in their group. Be good to see an old rivalry played out again and the other two are countries we haven't played for years now
But in terms of this event, I was also reading about how much carbon dioxide would be produced during it and it is an incredible amount. Also the fact that so many of the stadiums are going to be dismantled or have their capacities vastly reduced after the event finishes I think says something about how unsustainable this event is. And the worst thing of course is the amount of people that have died whilst constructing these stadiums
Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands Group B: England, Iran, USA, Wales/Scotland/Ukraine Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland Group D: France, UAE/Australia/Peru, Denmark, Tunisia Group E: Spain, Costa Rica/New Zealand, Germany, Japan Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea
Not bad for England at all really, although I hope the press and some fans don't get too carried away and start claiming 'it's coming home' after beating Iran. Don't really mind which of the European teams gets through the playoff to be honest, obviously a British derby would be fun but would also be good to see Ukraine get there too after everything that's gone on in that country recently
By far easiests draw for England and the order in which to play matches too I could not have picked it better myself except pot 4 could be the toughest by far. If you cant have 2 African nations in same group or whatever it was how come England could finish up with Wales or Scotland? USA easy, Iran Easy but if we get Wales or Scotland a really tough match but we should still sail through. The draw could have been a lot, lot worse.

You can have two UEFA-affiliated countries in the same group as there is 13 places for them, which is obviously more than the number of groups. The political stuff between England, Iran and the USA does add a lot more intrigue to it I feel than some other draws. I actually think Ukraine would be tougher than Wales or Scotland because they have a deeper pool of talent and would likely have many neutrals' support too, not discounting the fact that their players would be desperate to bring some element of joy to the poor people that have been suffering so much there recently.
I wonder what the odds are on Crawley having any players going to the tournament? I wouldn't rule out Appiah being picked for Ghana if he bangs quite a few goals in for us (assuming he'll be offered a new deal this summer, which I hope happens as I think he's done enough to deserve one)
Sorry Gareth of Southgate, as loyal Crawley Town fans we'll now be supporting the boys in red, white and blue
I was at the CCS for the win over Austria. We didn't have great seats but that was compensated by having Bale celebrate his wonder free kick about 12 feet in front of us. Still in the balance if we even make it, but - if so - not unhappy with the group. (Point being that, Southgate, decent chap though he is, doesn't necessarily carry best wishes from ALL Crawley fans )
Kind draw for England. Let's hope we don't drop the ball against the Americans like last time! I'm cautiously optimistic about England's chances. Not sure how we'd get on against a real top team though like a Brazil, France or Belgium.
