Have seen reports that Mr Kettle is retiring and have no doubt many will be rejoicing BUT
so often over the last few years on this forum so many of us have raged over poor refereeing decisions as if that was the reason we weren't successful. I was (am still am) an avid Yems fan, but even I felt his inability to deal with referees decisions cost him and the team many brownie points and maybe real ones as well!
Too often we on the forum bemoaned poor decisions and posted messages about how bad they were but referees are humans and they do make mistakes - its been part of the game since its inception. I don't believe its planned and can be unfortunate (like the example last year of the ball clearly crossing the line but the goal not been given) but we tended to use their mistakes as excuses for our ineptitude. How often has the guy behind me screamed offside or foul and I have thought the opposite - its all subjective.
Hopefully our new star lineup will more than make up for the occasional blip by referees and officials this coming season but I for one wish Mr Kettle well and thank him for his service.

I agree with this, I bet we won't be talking much about referees next season as we'll be going on about how good our team is...
When we had that horrible run in October/November it was obvious to me that it was due to players not being used properly and us having an inability to alter our tactics appropriately to fit whoever we were playing, but if you heard the interviews you'd think it was some conspiracy against us by the referees.
As with Kettle, one thing that did stand out to me with him was vs Port Vale when he failed to apply the rules properly when their guy did a foul throw which I thought was pretty poor, but he wasn't the worst ref I've seen. Second game he did down here I can't remember him doing anything, which for a ref is a good sign
Trevor was an odd ref. He was perfectly good for most of the game but then would go into "brain fart" mode and if it was your team he decided to take against you were in trouble. He would then calm down and all would be well again.
The general point about too much blame being attached to refereeing decisions I do agree with. Like Weststander I feel Yems" baiting and general demeanour towards refs did much more harm than good. You'd often hear Yems howl about a refereeing decision but say nothing about the two players miles out of position that led to the incident in the first place.
Referees are assessed on a regular basis - they will have a county coordinator, a mentor (may be the same person) and perhaps a regional coordinator. Normally they will be assessed at regular intervals (especially if they are refereeing a game of importance) and they will have discussions with their coordinator after their games. Clubs are asked to grade their performances and all of this is taken into account in their re-validation (or not).
The best referees move up and take on more difficult games and in higher divisions, some are returned to non-league.
The fact that Trevor Kettle operated at League Two level for his entire career (do let me know if this is incorrect) tells us something about his abilities.
Whatever we think of him, he was very experienced and that is always hard to replace.
I think the standard of refereeing at this level can be all over the place, sometimes the ref's have a quiet and sensible game, other times they make bizarre and inconsistent decisions. I feel that given the money and resources now at lower league level, goal line technology should be introduced at all EFL games. Thankfully we don't have VAR and I can't see that happening at a lower league level and thank god.

There was this video I saw yesterday that kinda sums up your first sentence well, most of the time he was competent enough but was prone to serious gaffes that made him gain his reputation
If he had been any good he would of been promoted up the leagues' but due to he catalogue of errors we were stuck with him in Div. 2. I for one are glad he's retired just hope his replacement is better.

This is what I mean by bizarre decisions. he probably had a fine uneventful game up until that point and then has a rush of blood to the head or he's just not watching the game, awful decision!
