Like John I don't understand the need for a dof. If you said he was head of scouting and statistics you could get your head around his role but Director of Football implies a l9t more.
With American owners it makes sense in appointing someone with the knowledge of the game in the Uk. Someone who can explain to the owners why when we are not scoring many goals we do not necessarily require another striker. He can assist with transfer negotiations and help the manager through difficult times. The clubs back room staff has increased, someone who can oversee the running of the club. Let’s see how this works. Was Steve Coppell a director of football at Crawley?

Yes he was and no one complained about it back then, it's just another available stick now. If people could complain about the 30% cut in season ticket prices, they would

The roles and responsibilities of a Director of Football can vary greatly depending on the club and what would be in their job description when they were recruited, but I'd imagine one of the key things would be for them to do stuff like negotiating contracts and transfers and other more business-related tasks, thus allowing the first team manager more time to focus on tactics and preparing the team for matches.
Basically I think in the modern game it's very rare now you'd have one person doing loads of different tasks like it might have been with Shankley at Liverpool or Wenger at Arsenal, nowadays certain responsibilities are often left to specialists
We have never had the need for a Director of Football before, but it does seem to now be a trend to follow like the proverbial sheep. Why the need?
Just what does the DIRECTOR of FOOTBALL do to earn his money?
JTG
Not really true, as Steve Duly was DoF back in the day, as was Steve Coppell.
I would see it as extra experience at the club. Right now we have Owners who have no experience of English football, an inexperienced General Manager and a Manager/Assistant who have never managed in the FL before. So no harm in bringing in someone who has been part of successful teams before.
Steve Duly did just about everything at the club and the dof title wasa recognition of that. I've always thought the dof for Steve Coppell was to try and keep him involved with the club more than a proper role.
I dont think either has gone onto other director of football roles elsewhere (I could be wrong here) but both had completely different roles anyway.
Does everything anyone says that disagrees with the club have to have a hidden (or not so hidden) agenda. I'm not sure about dof in a league 2 club. That doesn't mean I want wagmi gone.

Sorry to be that guy but Dan Micciche has previously managed Milton Keynes Dons, albeit he was only there for three months and 16 games before he left his position

Yes indeed you are right. I forgot Dan's 3 wins in 16 in early 2018, but you get the jist of it. Some wag will be along later to say Dan hasn't won a league game for over 4 years....
