www.sussexlive.co.uk/news/sussex-news/crawley-worst-places-ilivehere-2023-8119659 Its a town of outstanding natural beauty and this report really p1sses me off. Ancient woodland at Worth. Ducks that actually quack at Tilgate park. More roundabouts than magic roundabout at Swinedon and the greatest football team in the world. What's not to like? Anyway I blame WAGMI. Sort it out Preston.

Really not sure why this rubbish is on a football forum, "Crawley is shite" has been doing the rounds for years and is nothing more than personal opinion, anyone been to Luton, Worksop, Paignton or Blackpool? pointless twaddle only fit for the delete bin
Admin remark: Happy to retain this as its directly referencing the town and the club is part of the community but equally Im mindful this is a football forum. We dont often go off at a tangent. Lets see for now.
Ducks that actually quack - are you quackers? Doesthe image portrayed of the town put people off coming to the football I very much doubt it. Away fans? Perhaps though being near Brighton and the coast not too far away its possible some fans would come for a weekend. Main factor will be the distance (and associated cost) and for lots of northern clubs (thats lets face it are hardly areas of outstanding natural beauty themselves - think of Rochdale) this is likely to be of consideration not a duck pond a mile or so away! I cant believe Im replying to this post!
Crawley is a miserable place. No character, ugly streets full of depressing looking post WW2 houses. A terrible town centre full of a mixture of bargain basement shops and betting shops and vape shops and mobile phone shops. Many shops boarded up and closed down. Massive Roundabout after roundabout even in quiet areas.
Pluses are obviously it has a great football club, is very easy to get in and out of with a motorway, lots of dual carriageways, a major international airport and great rail and road links to London and Brighton.
Obviously there are a lot worse places to live, but let’s be honest it’s not great!
Pros and cons really, like everywhere else. Brilliant football club (so that George doesn't lock the thread ). Tilgate Park is the Jewel in the Crown, I believe. A con is the layout of much of Broadfield and Bewbush where it's difficult to find addresses unless you know the areas well - and that original ceiling heating was a crazy idea (warm air rises), but they did put that right. At least in much of the earlier part of town the road names are themed in groups, so even if you don't know your way around, you can figure out you're in the general area.
Crawley was regarded as a blot on the landscape by many of the Sussex country bumpkins, but it was poignantly necessary. There was a 20-year wait for social housing in London after WW2. I don't know about you but if I was in political office at the time, I wouldn't be prepared to look a load of de-mobbed Tommies in the eye and tell them they had been fighting for six years for the right to be homeless. Heck, some of those guys brought souvenirs back with them. You don't train a generation how to fight then give them the middle finger when they want something in return.
Crawley incorporated green spaces and light industry. No-one wanted those killer smogs that blighted London between the wars.
Yes, the town still has a working-class feel about it, but there's nothing wrong with that.
I have grown up around Tilgate Park in many different ways but that motorway doesn't half spoil the countryside the noise you cant escape it. What was in the news yesterday that centre parcs have decided against building in Worth. Clearly they thought it wasn't worth it! I'll get my coat!

Grew up and lived in Crawley for the last 43 yrs of my life. Fantastic place full of great people. I moved out for 3 yrs and missed Crawley hugely. The grass is not always greener.

Couldn't agree more. growing up here was great with so much green space to play and a real community spirit.
Its a shame the housing opportunities didn't last much past the first generation of new town inhabitants who had a choice of possibly 5 houses each!
This has changed but I guess that's common everywhere nowadays.
I've lived in Crawley, Durham, and now Sheffield (and a miserable year in Southampaton).
For it's many faults, Crawley is a good place to raise a child with it parks and slow roads. To be a teenager though...that sucked (even after they built the entertainment centre near the old Town Mead)

Visited Durham last year thought it had character but much prefer Chester, York and Bath in that order.
