Interesting that player of the tournament Solanke has just left Chelsea for Liverpool.
It says all you need to know about there being too many foreigners in English football that he can't get in the matchday squad at Chelsea.
If you're a young player at Chelsea (especially if English) you'll struggle to get in the matchday squad let alone get on the pitch. Don't think he will fare that much better at Liverpool though.
I think he'd be better off doing what his former teammate Tammy Abraham did and go to a Championship club.
Sadly as these Premier League youth players are on silly wages like 10k,20k,25k a week, Championship and lower half Premier League teams aren't prepared to pay those sort of wages and the players are unwilling to take a pay cut so often they will hang around on the books collecting silly money with a few loan spells here and there hardly playing any football until their long contracts run out and then be back to square one not having developed at all.
If any of the U20 world cup winning squad are to progress it requires two options
1. They leave the club, drop down to a championship or lower league team and take a pay cut and make sure they get some playing time. In other words take one step back to go 2 forwards
or
2. Premier League clubs stop spending £20M £30M etc. on young foreign players and start giving young English youth players a go.
Of the two options I think 1. is more feasible as Premier League clubs are getting richer and richer and have more money to spend than ever so will keep splashing cash buying players from abroad rather than taking a chance on youngsters.
