Some of my friends will know I'm in the lucky position (with my wife) to give respite care to a young lad every week. Spike (yes that's really his name) has significant special needs following a brain injury caused shortly after he was born - he's also deaf and has ADHD and cerebral palsy
He's been to a few games with me and this year we got him a season ticket - He's yet to see them lose so he's got to keep on coming/
On Saturday as part of his birthday I bought him a slot as the matchday mascot. I spoke to Carol at length about Spike's special needs before we went ahead.
Well what can I say about his experience. It was bloody fantastic. Carol was superb and took loads of time to make sure he was so well looked after. The photographer who followed him around was second to none and never lost his temper with him as he grabbed at his camera for the 99th time.
The stewards were magnificent. Helping him and never ever stopping to make him happy, The pre-match kick about was simply wonderful
Everything was truly wonderful - the players were just brilliant in the dressing room with him moving from their seats whenever he asked so he could have another picture taken with him. In the line up they were great - Dannie was a true captain leading him out on the pitch (watch the extended highlights for what he did with the assistants flag )
Our club is built on a community - I've often believed that but sometimes doubted that. On Saturday it was proved to me again.
I'm so grateful to the club, the players and especially Carol. I cried when we won promotion at Welling. Don't mind admitting when Spike walked out on Saturday with Dannie there was something in my eye again
Thank you
