After all the fuss about VAR, it was the failure of Hawkeye that Bournemouth believe cost them relegation. The "goal that was not spotted" was missed by all of their cameras & the match officials. Hawkeye apologised afterwards...
..however it does raise the question of whether the Ref & Lino would have applied a different judgement, if at the outset they were told before kickoff that the technology was not in place or could be fallible & also whether VAR should have intervened in an instance of a clear & obvious error by the Ref, isn't that the primary purpose of VAR...(?)
I do feel for Bournemouth but where do you take this as no doubt all clubs have had up/downs with VAR. Personally I think VAR has ruined part of football. I would prefer we scrap it.
Not so much technology but the application of rules need to change.
The hand ball rule as applied now is a farce. For evidence I submit Harry Kane's goal being chalked off due to handball by Moura.
The offside rule needs looking at. There was a chant at Luis Suarez along the lines of " Your teeth are offside" that could happen now!
How to change it is a different matter. Maybe, make it that the benefit of the doubt goes to the forward. That way a chest a foot or a head would be off but a toe, an armpit or Suarez's teeth wouldn't.
That Bournemouth goal. Why didn't the video ref call the ref on the pitch and tell him to look on the pitchside monitor? It would have sorted it out in minutes.
As for suing for the mistake. I feel that is along the lines of suing the ref. If we go down that line where would you the tech companies/ refs willing to risk losing everything just to try to help?
If an incorrect decision has been made by Match Officials, - eg (straight red card or violent conduct not seen), then the FA can rescind or give a three game ban AFTER the game has finished.
I can see that, in the not too distant years, the powers that be will allow good goals missed and points incorrectly won being awarded in order to fit.
Bournemouth to discuss legal challenge after Premier League relegation www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53571916 seriously they need to accept their failure to not be good enough as a team; this could get ridiculous with the legal system deciding every technology goal. I do not believe they have any hope whatsoever of changing their relegation fate.
The actual problem in this specific instance is that up to that game, it was commonly regarded that Hawkeye had a 100% record at analysing & determining goal or no goal.
Which in turn fostered a culture wherein the Ref & Lino did not have to rely on the evidence of their own eyes, as they had a far more accurate - to a forensic degree - and sophisticated solution, to undertake it on their behalf.
They both might well have believed that they had seen the ball cross the line... but at that point, why would they think that there was any reason to challenge the answer provided by the technology in place...?
I think the solutions are obvious:
- if Hawkeye cannot give a definitive answer, no side receives the benefit of the doubt (which might make it the only binary decision with 3 possible outcomes & require modification to the "watch" software).
- responsibility remains with the Ref, who is supported by use of VAR.
- Bournemouth & Villa should stay out of the courts & just face each other in a "winner stays up" play-off at a neutral venue... any League ground within a few miles of LGW...!
It's funny how Bournemouth didnt give a monkey's about the Hawkeye incident when it happened (as they thought Villa were already down) but blame it for their demotion
Did the ball cross the line? Yes but it wasnt awarded end of
Should we now take every VAR decision and put the wrongs right? If so Villa still stay up but Wolves make the top 4
The bottom line is over 38 games Bournemouth were simply not good enough
I doubt that Bournemouth will take this to court - it wouldn't rule in their favour anyway. In the unlikely event that they do take it to court, I reckon it's more likely they would be seeking financial recompense for loss of status rather than changing the result. I can't see either happening though.
Sssssshhhhh........Be a bit quiet with this one......
This thread is making me nervous, I can see the Germans wanting the 1966 World Cup as one of our goals did not cross the line 😳
England's 4th should never have stood... Some people were on the pitch, they thought it was all over...!
It is true that the Bournemouth "goal" was not awarded at the time, as there was no signal that it should have been.
However, The question still remains whether the Officials could possibly have realised that the lack of signal from Hawkeye - in this unique instance - meant "no decision, adopt plan B"... NOT "no goal, play on"...?
It was the first incorrect decision in like what 9000 or something. For me the rules need to change not the technology, VAR should have been allowed to overrule it
But that is the pivotal issue, at the time the Ref & VAR had no obvious reason & absolutely no precedent to even consider overruling it... No matter what they believed that they had actually seen...(?)

Brighton have done okay with VAR this year, we may not next year, it’s just the way it goes, that’s football as they say.
For me it gets more right than wrong.
Two clubs who consistently moaned about it were Sheffield Utd & Aston Villa, hey-ho...!
No by all means go with what you see but VAR could’ve 100% said goal. No need to guess from what you’ve seen.
Everyone has moaned about it, even Graham Potter after the Burnley match commented that it takes to long.
For me the tech is fine, it’s how it is used that’s the issue.
Offside should be clear gap between players to speed it up and remove the argument about being a toe offside.
I also don’t think it should have the clear an obvious error bit, I know it’s abit controversial but for me if it sees a rule break it should inform the ref for them to act upon it.
