The irony is if there hadn't been a lockdown with the cup successes and our league form surely our our crowds and sponsorship monies may have increased to the level where we may not have to sell players to survive.

Crowd numbers will never increase to the level that self financing requires, sponsorship may well increase in the short term but for how long? A life in League 1 would require numerous replacement players and a large increase in outgoings, particularly wages, and would probably increase the likelihood of having to sell players to survive, crowds of 3000/4000 aren't going to cut the mustard without an extraordinarily generous benefactor, and there aren't many of them wandering around Crawley
Virtually every player we have signed bar a few exceptions all get from supporters why have we signed him - look at his previous record, he is non-league a non league player, then you get the former club supporters saying he awful, glad we got rid - which also spells disaster even before the player has kicked a ball - why anyone would want to sign for us goes beyond belief.
Then you get the rumours and speculation - by so called scouts or non informed people - the only people who know what is going on are the management/director and the player involved with the club - until we see something official coming out as a club statement then is just not worth biting at these rumours - just ignore them - you are adding fuel to the fire and getting worked up by them.
I have been watching Crawley for more years than most on here (except Thad) we have always been a selling club that's how we have survived this long - especially in the last 10 years in the football league - if you want to stay in the League you have to generate income and our attendances just doesn't make up the difference - I wished it would - 4000 gates each week would certainly help to keep some of our young stars instead of having to sell them.
With John Yems, Lee Bradbury and Erdem Konyar - we will continue to find these diamonds - just give them the backing - we lose one we find one - as for not making the playoffs because of rumour and speculation is just nonsense.
Totally agree Alain. I am also old enough to remember the disappointment of having to sell the likes of Phil Basey and Eric Whitington so that the club could survive when various creditors were circling. That was nearly 50 years ago! :-O Not many months ago people were describing Watters as another journeyman and also questioning why we had signed Nichols. I also had Cheltenham and Bristol Rovers supporting friends questioning that one. All this without having seen them play for us. They haven't done too badly considering that welcome! Yes, it will be disappointing to lose either, especially as some of us haven't seen them play in the flesh, but if we need to do it to ensure we have a club to support then so be it. We have been close to going out of business several times - I'm sure nobody wants to see that happen.
It's worth mentioning that January sales of Tubbs and Barnett didn't damage our last promotion push from League 2.
We will never know whether our promotion run-in that season would have been easier had we kept them. We clinched it in a last-day win at Accrington - a game where we could have been three down at half time were it not for Shearer's heroics.

Can't remember selling Eric for money - can Craig Whittington £50k to Scarborough when Steve Wicks became their manager after us - took Craig before the Barnet F A cup game as I remember - We also sold Terry Robbins to Welling, Tommy Warrilow and Alan Lester both to Hythe United. Much later on was Jay Lovett to Brentford for then a record £75k fee.
Alain - we sold Eric to Folkestone for the princely sum of about £1500, although I'm sure I heard stories later that we never actually got all of that. Eric still ranks as one of my all time favourite players and I was gutted when he left. If I remember rightly from Supporters Club Committee meetings at the time, the Inland Revenue were lining up to put the boot in over unpaid taxes. Can't remember exactly now but it may also have been that time that Bass Charrington started complaining that they hadn't been paid for construction of the Bloodlight Club a number of years before.

We also went 7 games without a win and couldn’t score, until we brought Gary Alexander in on loan.

Exactly...with 2nd or 3rd lowest gates in the league we will always be a selling club. The owners were absolutely right to take the money. Who knows what may be around the corner - an injury? Or he may have been like Bez Lubala, started like a train and then hit the buffers.

absolutely right??? No one knows the value of the deal. Loads of what ifs, what if it wasnt 1m what if its say 500k and remainder in appearances or something like that? Do the owners make money outside and/or indirectly c/o the club no one knows.
If, including kids and freebies, you reckon the average gate money from a supporter is £12 (I've no idea how close this is) and that we have 26 home games in a season (including various cup games) that puts our gate receipts at about 26 x 12 x 2,200, that comes to £686,400. To sell one player who cost nothing for a million quid looks completely sensible when looking at those numbers. Of course, my numbers are probably a bit out and there is other match day income too, as there are expenses, but the money for Watters, if reports are accurate, covers the gate money for well over one season. I'm not so sure the owners had much choice.

Great post Alain, that is exactly how it is & likely how it always will be.
Nice to be name-checked too - very generous - but I am a lightweight JCL in comparison to your time served.
However, I reckon we are not the only "old timers" who never thought we would see the day, that our fans are still complaining... ...about Crawley Town FC selling a player for a cool million...!
Ps. The transfer has ruined my plans for a limited edition T-shirt, emblazoned with: "MAX LIVES WATTERS"

Over last few years before Yems we have seen rubbish football and so many terribly boring games as we have clung on and been happy to survive - without ambition it only gets worse. Taking money every time we get a gem and not replacing them with anything like the quality we are losing detracts from the squad and means slowly but surely we get worse over time. It also means surprise surprise lower crowds than we should expect. All credit to Yems who I think is great but unless we back him we will soon be bemoaning the loss of Nicholls and a host of other pros and probably Yems himself who add some degree of talent to the team. Having watched most of my games over the tears in non league I feel mediocracy is what most people are happy with in league 2 but is it enough?
