A few seasons ago the authorities decided to extend the advantage rule. It meant that if there was a foul and the move came to nothing, play could be pulled back and a free kick awarded. However, that never took off in the way I hoped it might. Recently Spurs were awarded a free kick in such circumstances, but only because the move failed almost immediately (I think the ball went for a goal kick). Personally, I would like to see a longer time delay before the advantage is regarded as 'over'. I'm not advocating the lengthy delay that we sometimes witness in rugby union, but somewhere in between might work.
Just my opinion. Others' thoughts are welcome whether or not they agree with mine - to me, presenting a good case either way is more important.
Inthe recent Brighton v Southampton game ,Brighton committed afoul just outside the area and the ref. played advantage.Adams was through and the goalkeeper made a good save. Then the ref gave the free kick which I think was unfair in the circumstances as it gave them two chances of scoring.Luckily the free kick came to nothing
