I took a stroll over to my old stamping ground this morning before going to work. I couldn't believe my eyes - there was actually a football match in progress on a pitch accessible from Cherry Lane and Martyrs Avenue - team shirts in glorious technicolor. I didn't realise how much I've been missing live football. It didn't matter that the pitch was a bit bumpy and the skill levels not what I'm used to seeing. I still don't know the names of the teams. My first live football match in over a year.
They were two teams who were due to be playing in the same division and also happened to be drawn against each other in a cup game. Due to the curtailment of the season they had reached an agreement that there would be one game for both matches and that the result would stand for both.
The game ended 3-3 and they had a penalty shoot-out. They didn't bother with extra time; it was the first game back so were probably knackered.
I could see which players stood out from the rest. It was a privilege to stand there and watch.
