87 mins gone and 1-1 Swiss down to 10. Red card looked harsh to me - looked like it should have been yellow.
Just seen the highlights. Awful decision. Michael Oliver should be forced to apologise to the whole of Switzerland for that terrible decision. I am fed up of these ridiculous reds where a player goes off for a follow through after a clean tackle. How can you stop a follow through? Maybe UEFA and FIFA should explain this? Have any of the people that make the rules ever played a game in their life? Have they ever even played a Sunday league game? The Swiss player won the ball and was not off the ground or anything. How the ref could have known for certain that was a ref in a split second is implausible. Should have gone to VAR at least.

VAR did check it but didn't overrule - presumably they didn't regard it as a clear and obvious error. I felt they should have advised the ref to check the monitor to review his decision.

I see what you’re saying Paul, but I think the ref should have given a yellow then watched it back on the monitor to review as VAR will rarely overturn a ref and he made such a quick decision I can only conclude from the swift nature the decision was made he was influenced by the Spanish players.

I think the only thing he concluded was that it was reckless.

Yes, going for the lesser option would make sense when VAR is available. Had he done so, I don't think VAR would have summoned him to the monitor.
