Almost everyone of my vintage recalls Doc Marten boots with nostalgic affection, but most likely have mixed feelings about Rushden & Diamonds, the original 'vanity project' football club.
The man behind both - Max Griggs - has died. He originally offered his backing to local club "The Cobblers. As history has shown, Northampton Town have been run for decades by crooks & incompetents . They were apparently happy to take his cash, but not offer a Directorship in return.
He took his money elsewhere & was also happy to sponsor a few competitions that our own Club were very happy to be part of.
I was always told that when he left Rushden and Diamonds he made sure there was enough money left to pay the players contracts and running costs etc but the people who took over spent money like he was still there and came a cropper.
Played at Rushden before the merger with Irthlingbrough Diamonds and I believe they saved us from relegation in 90/91 when their Ground didn't come up to scratch and they were relegated. From memory it was a horrible ground but memory is not what it was
You are indeed correct Tony. They finished 14th while we finished in the drop zone, but thankfully for us, the league clamped down on grounds that year, so we were reprieved when theirs wasn’t up to standard, along with two sides who had won promotion. Always wondered what would have happened had we gone down that year…
