I'm sure the young kids would have preferred to have joined Man U and Liverpool but the facts are they were offered training opportunities at a cash-strapped League 2 club with the lowest wage budget in the league. It wasn't a perfect structure here given the financial contraints, everybody knows that, but unless you were planning to financially invest in the club, I'm not sure what complaining about us not having the money to do ideally what we would have wanted really achieves much. We picked up some diamonds in Watters and Tsaroulla and the rest haven't reach that standard but that's a pretty good outcome for the club all told.
The even better news is that we do have more money now and can introduce a more formal structure of regular games for the development players. But some are not happy about that either? Doesn't seem the club can win on this issue
You don't answer my point about the club wasting the opportunity to actually play these kids in the SSC or pizza trophy. You are satisfied that they get to train with the first teamers on an artificial pitch. In your eyes that is more than enough for those lads, and they should be grateful for it. Heaven forbid that they might actually want to play some football.
Yes, we picked up some diamonds in Tsaroulla and Watters, no doubt about it. But we only know how good they are because we ACTUALLY PLAYED THEM in first team games. If all they ever did was train, Tsaroulla wouldn't have scored his wonder goal against Premier League Leeds, and Watters wouldn't have been sold for £1M. Erdem's policy of signing up every half-talented kid in the area, looking for the next payday, sorry, next Watters, came unstuck because Yems never played any of them. I'm sorry you can't see the obvious.
Point me out where I said I was satisfied that they were training on an artificial pitch, you might have trouble because you made that bit up. And denying money played any part in our arrangements for the fringe squad players at all? Come on.
As for not playing them in the cup, Yems felt to do so would risk first teamers who had to be involved given the lack of numbers. We had many players out injured and out on loan getting those games you wanted them to get - they weren't all available to play in the cup. I haven't launched a forensic assessment to discover whether Yems was telling the truth or not but I'm probably going to give him the benefit of the doubt on that one. You can continue to have a go at him if you like over this but grow a thicker skin eh because some may disagree with you.
