Interesting that at a time when our club is pursuing talent from the Netherlands, that their national football fortunes have hit an all-time low. They made the World Cup final as recently as 2010, although it was with a brutal style of play that was out of keeping with their tradition and scraped through to the semi-finals at the last World Cup, again not winning too many plaudits for their approach... since then they failed to qualify for the Euro 2016 tournament and yesterday saw the end of their prospects for next years World Cup.
They still have a few decent defenders but don't appear to be producing those great attackers anymore. All a bit of a mystery, particularly when you compare and contrast with Belgium, who are blessed with outstanding talent in all positions.
However, I think our scouts should take a look at Dennis van Duinen who plays in their 4th division... I think he has the qualities that gave Danny Hockton such a popular cult following with our fan-base... judge for yourselves..!
A few years back we turned up to find the game had been called off The team had been told to train on the pitch opposite Redz. A ball flew out of the court into Broadfield, that'll be Danny I said to my brother, next thing Hockton ran out over the bridge to seek the errant ball 😃
There is something brilliant about that tale FNB, it has the classic Shakepearean qualities of history, comedy, tragedy & farce.. and in common with the works of the Bard himself, scholars will debate the accuracy of one aspect which I have highlighted below...

And we cannot forget the FA Cup tie at Flackwell Heath. Sir Danny's shooting that day was so wayward that even the referee was p1ssing himself laughing. Also Flackwell Heath had about 20 fans, 5 of which were in a band behind one goal, great times.

Remember it well. Four goals and not one from a striker.
Also approaching the motorway junction on the way home we could see the traffic queued across the road - the accident was just before the entry slip road so we could just sail onto the empty motorway!

Only on a technicality, his strike partner Dave Stevens - who was equally wasteful that day - hit a 30-yard screamer into the top corner... certainly the best goal he never scored, as it bounced out of the net and they played on, even the Flackwell Heath goalie couldn't understand why it hadn't been given.
The game where Danny Hockton gave a masterclass of his craft was an SSC semi-final at Lewes against Rye & Iden, the simpler the chance the worse the miss, some of them would have been put away by Long John Silver, he must have wasted a good dozen... then in extra-time against nine men, he scored a cracker from easily the toughest opportunity of all... it was that incredible ability to turn the natural order on its head that made him unique.

And a nice counter to all those apologists (Gareth Southgate, PL managers quoting the Spanish and other examples) who applaud reserve or U23 sides of the big clubs being allowed into our football. I think Ajax kids team came second in the division below the Dutch top league (Eredivisie?) last season. Bring back the Football Combination is what I say, in its day an excellent competition for reserve and young players to play some proper football. I wonder who stopped that?!!!

Stopped by lack of interest
Or more properly Premier League self interest. It served the purpose of a good standard of football for young players at top level to play with and against senior pro's. But the Premier League decided to start up their own Reserve league and kept it exclusive causing a lessening of interest in the FC. Then PL clubs started to lose interest in the PL reserve league and it got ditched in favour of an U-21 league and EPPP (or whatever they call it). Now they have decided they want their kids to play against senior pro's and rather than start up their own reserve league they thought they would hijack and f**** up our football by initially working their way into the FL Trophy and I assume hoping eventually to completely finish lower league football as a meaningful 100 year+ competition by getting their reserve/kids teams into our leagues. All in the national teams interests of course (yes of course Gareth!!!). And we have our EFL head Shaun Harvey seemingly bending over backwards to bring this to fruition, which is why I for one (along with fans of most other clubs than ours) am boycotting the FL Trophy!
