Reminder that an up and coming new manager that has one of the best managerial records at the club was pushed out by Wagmi for this guy.
Although Lewis Young was given the heave-ho by the owners without deserving it, it's hard to argue that they didn't eventually get it right by appointing SL. The problem, as you allude, was the bit in the middle when they appointed ME (as in Etherington - not my good self ). I'm not going to say too much about ME because we were not party to what went on behind the scenes. Although it's impossible to know, my gut says that the owners were desperate and made him promises they couldn't keep - or gave him false impressions. It's odd for someone to leave so soon unless there has been an element of mis-selling.
They probably told him he would be allowed to pick the team. They just didn't mention the players he wouldn't be allowed to select, for whatever ridiculous reasons.
Not sure he was ever manager was he - just a temporary placement ahead of an announcement
They're called caretaker managers, don't be pedantic. Lewis should have been given the job full time, but Eben was an idiot.
Yes agreed Northgate after rereading it it does come across like that - apologies to Gbred if that's the case as wasn't intended that way.
What I was trying to put across (badly!) was that Young was never a manager and although we didn't do badly while he was caretaker we could never have kept him on as the new manager although I also agree Etherington was a really strange choice in the circumstances. He was hand holding us in a time of need without the requisite experience and knowledge. Calling Lewis a manager is like calling an air steward who has had to take control of a plane in an emergency a pilot!

I think you see football differently to most of us on here. Lewis was caretaker manager, and doing a bloody good job. We were playing far better football than under your idol Betsy, actually winning games. The players bought into the style of play Lewis wanted, the fans (most of us) were on board, it was going well and CTFC were slowly climbing the table, away from the relegation zone Betsy had sunk us into. Then the clueless muppet Eben stuck his oar in, made up a stupid stat to try to justify ditching Lewis, and then he hired Etherington, who had less first team management experience than Lewis! I'm really not sure why you think PL academy coaches with zero experience are proper managers, but Lewis wasn't.

Don't think there is that much of a gap. I am not a fan of newbies like Betsy, Etherington, Clemence (and even Giggs going to Wales) taking on league / international clubs as its a big risk for the club. Hiring the Cowley brothers is much more to my liking. I supported keeping Betsy on longer as I thought that changing after such a short tenure would most likely cause us more problems. He obviously wasn't a good manager at that time but I felt he deserved more time and support. So all in all it was whether to keep him longer where we differed but that's old news so lets move on.
