Watching other clubs sign scores of players all over L2 has been hard to read.
The one signing that irritated me the most was the article about the promising 21 year old central defender from Brighton FC who has gone on loan to .. yes you’ve guessed it- Crewe.
Crewe?
Correct me if I’m wrong we’ve just signed a central defender from Ebsfleet and another player who obviously lives just down the road wasn’t available to us before them?
Doesn’t mean I won’t be shouting support for the new guy we have with everything I’ve got but why aren’t we tapping in to the cash and player rich Premier League club just down the road?
I’m sure it’s not as simple as I think but maybe it is.

It may simply be that Crewe were prepared to stump up a larger chunk of his wages than we were. It has been a quiet transfer window all around as clubs open their spreadsheets for fear of doing an Everton. That permeates down the divisions.
It's not so much that we are skint so can't offer decent deals to players so they go elsewhere. It's more that the whole transfer window for us was a bit of a clusterfuck.
We tried to sign a player on loan last minute, despite having a month to get the deal done. Then when Grimsby didn't loan him to us, it left no time to sort a replacement. Why didn't we get a striker in earlier in the window? Why did we pin all our hopes on Grimsby signing a new striker of their own, so that they would be prepared to loan the other guy to us? There's no common sense going on with CTFC.
We have signed an unknown midfielder who has been playing in the USA. Will he be the required level to play L2? Time will tell. We also signed a centre back when we already have half a dozen in that position. Instead of cover for our full backs, which we desperately need.
And we have gone most of the transfer window with only one goalie, as the one we signed immediately got sick and was unavailable, and we didn't recall Greensall, even though he wasn't getting games on his loan.
I guess this is what happens when a club doesn't have a CEO, doesn't have a DoF, and has American owners who know jack shit about how football works over here.
We really need to professionalise our backroom support re player care and recruitment.
SL will be working every hour God gives to make the team a success but he could do with a helping hand in that respect.
Not one who is prone to hyperbole but I wasn’t exaggerating about the numbers being recruited by other L2 clubs because sadly I follow most of their activity and these were recruiting from almost day 1 of the window.
I think we’re dozy and slow off the mark for a number of reasons and one is, as you say, we don’t have a DOF who already has an idea of who the club wants and how quickly they have to move off the mark to get deals done from day one. They should be ready with a shopping list of players beforehand. We’re too late to the party.
Is it the best idea potentially to have SL’s phone ringing about players when he’s half way through working out a corner kick routine with the players on the grass?
1- a great manager in my opinion 2- have made a fantastic start in the league 3- some real good quality players with promise 4- good people around the club who work bloody hard to make the club a success
I wonder whether Jack Roles could be developed to become a decent striker - he does have a decent shot and seems to be a bit more robust than Orsi. Perhaps he lacks a bit of pace?
Darcy and Tsaroulla are others that cut in from the wing and score great goals. Forster scored a great goal against Bristol Rovers beating 3 players and has not been used much after Scott raved about him when he signed.
Well a few league 2 teams did actually less business than us and did very little. Going through the list I saw Tom Nicholls went to Mansfield...must have missed that on Transfer Special. Can't blame him!

A quick check of the BBC website showed that 21 League 2 clubs signed strikers in the transfer window including 12 clubs on transfer day. Many bought 2 or 3 at different times of the month.
The only three clubs not to buy a striker, were Tranmere, Salford and us. Salford only made two signings, and Tranmere only renewed one loan.

It could be as simple as us not rating him that highly. Remember Jack Spong? Then again, maybe Spong is why Brighton may have been reluctant to deal with us.

Teddy Jenks did ok for us. Would have played more but was often injured. Dallison was on loan to us from Albion initially but got crocked straight off the bat. Spong just wasn't very good. So I can't see why Brighton wouldn't want to loan us players anymore.

Missed about Nichols on the former Reds thread as well Trev.
Northgate Red: Teddy Jenks has left FGR and from what I've read most of their fans are quite happy with him leaving.
Top clubs are more willing to loan players to Crewe because of their decent training facilities. Same goes for Burton.
Opinions are like arseholes (yours stink) but I do feel a dof would be helpful IF (a big if) we can afford one.
This is what we've got for the rest of the season. COYR
Brighton tend to send their youngster away from the local area so that they are away from their home environment - basically to stand on their own two feet.

Yes, Jenks signed for FGR in the Summer after being released by Brighton and was gone by the New Year from what I remember. He started the game against us at their place and did nothing so got the shepherd’s crook at half time. I thought he had one or two decent games for us but seemed horribly injury prone.
