We were pretty much everybody's favourites to go down this season
93% of all the pre-season bets for League Two relegation on Bet365 were laid on Crawley
We got rid of almost all our previous squad
We pulled in most of this year's squad from non-league (some from three divisions lower), released players or "failed" players from other clubs
We had the second lowest playing budget in the Division
Almost every single game we played, opposition fans referred to us as "only" and "just" Crawley
Yet:
We reached the play-offs for the first time in our history
We comfortably demolished the team with the second biggest budget in the league and achieved a record play-offs win. Some of their fans' comments beforehand included "who do we want in the final after we have swatted Crawley aside", "this will be so easy it is unfair"
We reached Wembley for the first time in our history
We comfortably beat Crewe in the play off final at Wembley to gain promotion
Have I got this bit right?
Did we beat Nigel Clough's Mansfield Town away from home 4-1 with about five games remaining?
Did we systematically take Mike Williamson's team apart in each of the two games
Did we comfortably defeat Lee Bell's Crewe in the final
Was Scott Lindsey really not nominated for Manager of the Year
Did none of our player really not make the team of the season
Enjoy every single moment of this guys, let's hope this continues and we are seen as "just" and "only" Crawley next season.
It helped that there were only 10 points between Doncaster in 5th and Notts Co in 14th. It kept the season alive for a lot of teams and we ran into form at exactly the right time. The semi final v MKD was so one sided it was unbelievable but Crewe were a tougher challenge and only when we went 2-0 up did it look comfortable.
Unfortunately in 2022-2023 Wagmi paid the price for giving contracts to all the old Yems players and paying ridiculous wages for players that weren't up to it. SL said 9 of Sunday's squad were playing non league a year ago, showing that there is potential in the lower leagues.
