He received an offer that was more suitable for him - probably higher pay and/or closer to home. Crawley management allowed him to go in spite of being in contract (hopefully receiving some compensation). Players and managers break contracts all the time. Most of the time the contracts are only in place in order to receive compensation - aka transfer fee in the case of players.
I'm more bothered about the timing than anything because a new manager will not be able to bring in players that he wants until January - unless those players are currently unemployed.
