As for the starting XI at Carlisle will be interesting to see the line up against Bracknell on Tuesday evening for I assume a "B" team game as I'm sure that non of the starting team will be involved.
The Bracknell game is a week on Tuesday, not this Tuesday.

TBF I only found about this on here, so thanks to Alain for mentioning it in the first place
Having just watched the Aldershot highlights I assume it was Betsy's first chance to hand out a bo##ocking we looked really sloppy defencingly Aldershot looked much sharper up for it,yeah I know it was a friendly but we should have looked much more organised.
Its progressive to me and its better than the long ball hoof.
You've misunderstood.
Playing the ball between your full backs and centre backs is not progressive.
Possession football in the opponents half is.
As for long hoofs forward. I thought the keepers pass for Nichols v QPR was pretty progressive. It was just a long ball forward. Bergkamp's goal v Argentina is one of the best I've ever seen. It came from a long pass forward. There are many ways to play the game refusing to play long because it's not "pretty" is cutting your nose off to spite your face.

How is the new manager refusing to play it long if you’ve just highlighted something in his preseason where we did just that.
The issue is more relevantly the amount of times we kick the ball away fruitlessly merely so it comes straight back at us in waves of attacks by opponents. It was a problem for us last season when holding on to leads, particularly earlier in the season.
It’s probably not helpful discussing this issue in extremes. We were the 4th lowest possession team in League 2 last season (thank you Hearts commentators for the homework) and the key point I think people have made is the teams near the top playing winning football do tend to have much better stats than that. So the manager is trying to improve that rather than issuing phantom bans on balls over 10 yards. The theory is the more you have the ball, the more you tire opponents and create dominance in a game. But it won’t click overnight.

I think the key difference here is from where the balls comes back at us. Edge of our pen area or 40+ yards is likely to have different effect i.e. a 40, 45 yard strike is less likely to enter our goal net than a goal scoring opportunity much closer to our goal. Of course if we keep possession and progress the ball all the aforemention is irrelevant. Lots of "Ifs" though.

Steve, now you've misunderstood. I never said Betsy was refusing to play it long I replied to a poster who had misunderstood my point...that's now two people so I obviously didn't make it well.
Keeping the ball in football is generally good.
Playing the ball around your defenders is generally bad!
If we wish to play possession football imho we need to do so in the opposition half. The original reply said long ball hoofs were bad and possession football is good. I pointed out that our first goal v QPR came from a long ball. I did not say the manager was refusing to play it long. The point I was trying to make is that all possession or all long ball is bad. Mix it up or we get bored.

I did not misunderstand your post, possession football is better than long ball hoofs and by the way along ball pass is not a hoof.

Possession is fine. Playing around at the back and giving away 3 goals isn't. Long passes are fine, but thrashing the ball forward aimlessly means it comes straight back.
I'm sure KB will find the balance. Kewell had the same issues, but by the time he got the balance right he had decided to leave.

Fair enough but we are in danger of getting lost in the weeds here of this debate I think. It's really the case that you can't ONLY play possession football in the opponent's half, you need to move the opposition around the pitch to create openings in the opposition half by being comfortable with the ball everywhere on the pitch. Every possession football team will have defenders and the keeper passing the ball, to ban that is as silly as banning long balls. There is a balance needed on all these things and I'm sure you, me and Betsy would all agree on that.
Let's see how we get on in practice. Betsy really needs time to implement what he is trying to do before people declare it a dangerous failure. There will be setbacks - even teams well drilled at it mess up, the Spanish international keeper Robert Sanchez has ballsed up twice in the last week down in Brighton with his passing, but Brighton fans will tell you that's how they got to 9th last season even despite a very difficult adjustment period to possession football after Chris Hughton was sacked.
