The mystery of why we can play so badly on Saturday yet so well tonight often falls to me on the shoulders of one player. I can never work out if Tom Nichols only plays well when all the other 10 players around him are at good levels, or is it Tom Nichols playing well lifts all the other players around him, chicken or egg thing.
Anyway he was well below par on Saturday after a great game against Northampton and now he’s king of the walk again tonight. Why the levels go up and down I just don’t get.
For sure he deserved MOTM with the goal and assist and honourable mentions to the other players creating the goals, Nadderz not at his best certainly but a key assist for the first and Powell gets a lot of pelters but again key in the build up for the second as he was against Bristol Rovers.
As some mentioned I thought actually there were two guys at the back who got close to MOTM. What a great performance by Ransom, not given a sniff of an opportunity last season but was superb tonight in that key role that Conroy or Craig takes on of the most central organising defender. He looks a young Craig to me and tonight we should be looking at his contract and tying him down for a bit longer.
As good was Travis Johnson who has looked very nervous in previous games but was exceptional in outpacing a lot of very quick Premiership squad players tonight, maybe he is more suited to be part of that back 3 rather than the more complex role of wing back, who knows, it’s still all very early days for so many of our newer players.
While I’ve pleaded for patience for Betsy I’m realistic that a younger developing team is still going to have a few pratfalls ahead of it. Hopefully not this coming Saturday but there are never any guarantees. Backing the players with vocal support then is worth more then being “only sing when we’re winning” fans.
I also know that no fan will ever have their mind changed by being lectured or shamed. Only wins will get the fan base fully united behind the team. And that’s Betsy’s job so over to him for the rest of the season at least
