Before the whole Wright brothers circus we were 10 games undefeated including the Leeds game. As much as Yems deserves credit for getting us in that position he deserves criticism for destroying the season. Yes we sold Watters, but he was injured for most of that run so we were far from a one man team. Yes we had covid outbreak but so did others. I believe Yems wanted to play his mates and would have picked M Wright over Dallison again and again if he could have. Didn’t matter how bad J Wright was or how often we lost he would pick him. Imagine what this would do to a dressing room? With the squad we had last season was a disappointment. This season doesn’t matter how bad Craig plays he’s going to play him. We need change soon before this season is lost but I feel the owners are going quiet and perhaps losing interest in this project.
That's purely your speculation, preposterous accusation and negative interpretation, in my opinion.
Indeed, the owner was over for the recent midweek game that had the big crowd. People have been predicting him losing interest for a long while now and I even briefly believed it myself but it turned out to be a bit of a mug’s game

I think if the hierarchy were going quiet and losing interest I doubt Erdem would have been willing to put himself in front of fans tomorrow evening and answer questions, think the timing of it is definitely more than a coincidence too, and whilst Yems definitely does seem to have his favourites and freeze out other players for no apparent reason, I highly doubt M Wright would have been picked all the time if he could (and to be honest the whole episode with that was insulting, especially to players like Nick Tsaroulla would have worked their socks off just to be able to play professional football). But I do agree though that a more competent manager would have got us much nearer the playoffs last season
Any explanation why last season Yems did much better than Yates, Cioffi, Kewell, Drummy have in recent years? Honestly the negativity after a few bad results is mood driven rather than fact driven

Probably because he had a better squad available then the managers mentioned here, and I thought the second half of last season was pretty poor tbh considering we were 6th in January, but yet weren't close to getting playoffs due to some really awful performances afterwards
To actually give Harry Kewell some credit, he did finish 14th with a squad that I thought was a lot worse than what we have right now, and think Yates and Drummy were affected by their squads containing mostly journeymen and cheap players from academies who weren't ever going to make it. Cioffi, although he might have lacked tactical nous despite probably being a very good coach, was 60 minutes away from taking us to the quarter final of the League Cup, which if it had happened would have been an unbelievable achievement and no doubt would have kept him in the position for longer than he eventually did

Can you see any connection between having a better squad and the manager’s role in finding players? Is the budget really higher now? Doubt it
I thought Mark Yates did a decent job bearing in mind the squad he had and the mess left behind from the previous era after the funding tap was turned off. I'm sure Mark once said that 80% of his budget was already committed to John Gregory's clueless players.
After that it became a revolving door and really you don't get anywhere by changing the manager every 5 minutes.
Also none of us knows how much say the manager has/had in signing players, quite a few that popped up during Selim's time looked as if they came from Dog & Duck FC and I doubt would have been on the radar of the manager at the time.
I agree Alex, although I wonder if we know the full story. He was also brought on as substitute for the Leeds match. This must have unsettled the squad morale.
Sure, of course, we will never know the full story, but I can't imagine the players would have been anything more than indifferent towards Mark Wright. I would like to Yems is the one that makes all the decisions with regards to the football side of things and therefore it was his decision alone to bring in Mark Wright and start him in a league game (nothing to do with the directors), but to me it makes us look totally tinpot that we would pull such a shameless publicity stunt.

The quality of players we had during the Yates and Drummy seasons were poor- Simon Walton, Bobson Bawling, Lee Barnard, Billy CLifton, Roarie Deacon, Andre Blackman, Conor Henderson, Aryan Tajbakhsh, Chris Arthur, Alex Davey- some dreadful players. Only thanks to a handful of decent players like Enzio, Collins and Morris in our goal that kept us up during those seasons.
Yems has certainly got a better squad than we had in those days, so I think a mid table finish is a fair expectation given that we've had some dreadful players before and still stayed up.
All you people about Tony Craig and quoting stats as reasons for dropping him, were any of you actually at the game? He and Lynch were our best two players.

Do we have a bigger budget now than then? I’d say that’s very unlikely given the global Covid crisis we’ve just been through. So the manager deserves credit for that

JB; if you were there please give a proper account of what occurred.
Scunthorpe fans have posted that they were shocked about our lack of effort during the game. No names given but that's because they don't know our players.
Was it a horror show that they and Yems allude to or were we just unlucky?

Well, as Simon posted on the fans forum thread, we apparently a bottom two budget as revealed at the fans forum.

I'd be surprised if the budget was bigger.
However remember Yates inherited the squad from John Gregory which included players on L1 wages like Harrold, McLeod, Tomlin, Smith, Edwards, Bradley. As I recall 80% of his budget was already spent on players he inherited.
Dermot was a thoroughly nice bloke but despite some decent signings the move from Chelsea to Crawley just didn't work out.
I'm not sure Yems has a better squad (for a start we don't have a forward like McLeod or Collins) but he has the lads playing like a team.

I'm surprised you don't think we have a better squad now than 5-6 years ago Simon. We had some real duff players back in those days, I would say now that the players we have playing regularly (not the squad players that never feature) are clearly of a higher standard than we have had in recent times. Not play off material, but definitely good enough for a mid table finish. In hindsight Yates did a great job to keep such a poor team in the league at a crucial time n our history when a relegation to non league could've been a disaster for the club.

I thought Yates squad was as good. Players like Bradley, Edwards, Harrold, Yorwerth, Smith, Hancox and Woodman would definitely get in our squad now. But he did well to keep us mid table.
Dermot's team - least said the better. However it was always going to take time to bed in his model and I was sorry he was moved on. Of course his number 2 Matt Gray has also done well as a manager.

I'd argue that Dermot should definitely have been given more time, as if that was done he could have build an exciting project here, massive shame we never got to find out
