Lewis Young deserves huge credit for this win and I’m delighted for him, the players and Wagmi after a difficult period.
Lewis made a couple of tweaks today which for me worked really well.
Most fundamentally he reorganised at the back and went to a 442 which I think is sensible, it’s a system footballers most understand and I think in a week of upheaval it’s the percentage way to go. A problem over the past few weeks has been a slightly creaky partnership with Craig and Tsaroulla down the left which probs asked too much of our veteran defender. But the Tsaroulla-Fellows link up worked much more fluently with the ball.
Secondly it was right to reward David Robson with a start in goal after his excellent display against Portsmouth. For me that superb save in injury time made him my MOTM, well as both the natural wingers Tilley and Fellows played. I don’t see this as any knock to Corey Addai who has performed manfully this season. After fruitless years spent trying to bring keepers in to give competition to Morris I really think we’ve come up trumps this season with the talent we’ve brought in. I’d rather tie down David and Corey to long term deals rather than see them drift off to other clubs but that’ll be one for the new manager to decide if he wants to risk that by getting more years out of Glenn.
I don’t think the subs messed up things too much today, alas Newport’s goal out of the blue just changed the game as goals always do.
The conundrum of how we fit a talented player like Telford into the team when Nichols effectively plays in his role wasn’t solved today. I personally think it requires a proper target man which would create space for them both and we don’t have that. Was an urgent purchase for the window just gone that didn’t happen and I think it needs to be a priority for January
Not sure we can tie down Robson, he's on loan, seems unlikely Hull will release a Wales U21 international with such potential. We can only hope though...
