Arthur deal expired in June but there was a 1 year option. To be fair if Collins stays it will make us quite predictable, mark him or shut off the supply and there is no other threat. At our level 250,000 well spent could get 3 decent league 2 players which is what we need.
Maybe too much of our available budget is being spent off the field on HK and entourage, and if we are so strapped for cash do we really need a Director of Football as well. I know its too late now but surely a FL manager with skills in player signings could have covered both jobs and saved us some money? I am sure as he says Selim is enjoying working with HK as a high profile champions league winner, but is that to our benefit or just his? It isnt as if we are trying to nurture up and coming talent with a youth system to oversee a recruitment policy, or are we?

I thought Selim was Chief Interpreter, but I guess Director of Football looks better when dealing with people and other clubs.
Yes, it did help last season, but if our teams safety from relegation rests upon one player and he gets injured or most likely sold to a promotion chasing team in January we'd be left with no money and no goals. At the end of the day 20 goal a season strikers do not stay at clubs at the bottom of league two. Loyalty does not apply, he's come on a free, scored goals and made us 1/4 million. It's sad but inevitable, our future success depends upon good recruitment of non league talent and players who haven't quite made it at a higher level. Retaining talented individuals will only happen when they believe we have realistic hopes of promotion. The fact that we have signed 2 top strikers in the last 3 years on frees shows it can be done.
very true reddish but you must bring a quality replacement in first so the fans can at least see why we are selling our most valuable asset for a cut price fee, 500k would be about right so in light of Collins impending transfer we need to go out and sign a Matt Godden or Luke Berry to show we are not simply settling for bottom 6 yet again

Some good points in here but the timing of this when most have committed (or not) to season ticket purchase is "unfortunate" and might be miscontrued by some coming not long after public statements that we do not need to sell Collins, not to mention its contradicting our statements on ambition. Nothing is guaranteed but Collins was our best bet at getting goals to keep us in this division (or maybe even get us higher up the table), anything else will be a gamble and a gamble that might impact on crowds and negate the financial benefits of the sale? If we have to rely on a serial injury case in Matt Harrold and untried youngsters to avoid the drop then that is surely a bigger risk? If we need to sell then somebody say so, but also that might then mean we need the cash to bail us out rather than spending on replacements. Not saying there is a crisis, hopefully there isnt as I am one of those who has committed to a season ticket, but with this potential sale and our newly appointed GM resigning after a couple of months and you do start to wonder. Especially as Selim seems to place great store by our being a "family". Unfortunately the family seem to be leaving home!
Couldn't agree more Mick - i wont be renewing until i see the money spent on quality editions, i just cant bare to watch yet another year fighting relegation not when we can do so much better
I don't think the club have any option than to sell Collins if offered a good price. I believe he lives north of London anyway and to play for a team that gets three times our average gate on (presumably) higher wages is a no brainer. He did a very good job for us last season and I wish him good luck for the future - except when he plays against us.
What would you do if you were James Collins ? If I were him I would want to leave.

some players have loyalty and affiliatuon beyond money to clubs and football. Rare granted and i take your point seems very reasonable too.

While i agree to an extent, its not the fact he is leaving for me its the fact he appears to be going for peanuts and it shows a distinct lack of ambition unless we bring in a replacement the same time he goes - at least that way it softens the blow

They do have an option as he hasnt appeared to push for a move, he is on a two year contract and his goals over two seasons are worth more than £250k, where he lives isnt relevant in this game. But I would like the club to be more open in the reasons for the sale if in fact we are in some trouble, bearing in mind also that we have a loyal servant to the club and newly appointed GM resigning after a very short time in the role?

Collins is from Coventry and he probably lives in the Crawley area - there'd be no point in living in north London if you're from the Midlands and live in the Sussex area.
