This appointment is a bit out of the blue and unexpected NGL but he's not had a training session yet, let alone a match so I don't feel it's right for me to judge him yet. I can see why a lot of people are worried he might be similar to Betsy considering his past experience however just going by his interview and talking to a couple of Peterborough fans I get the feeling it won't be a repeat of the methodical, slow football we saw in the first two months of the season. Time will tell though.
January will certainly be key as to the decisions he makes. Will he recall Glenn Morris and even Kwesi Appiah? What does he do with the players Betsy signed that are nowhere near the first team now? Will he be able to find the right back and central midfielder I feel we need if we're to progress?
I would have liked someone with more experience but Lewis had next to none and surprised many. It’s a shame ME is being written off before he even steps foot in Crawley, says something quite dispiriting about fan culture these days or at least the online version of it
yes and no. For the "no" it screams 1. Lewis Young was one of our own a Crawley lad through and through for many years. Club legend. 2. If ME is anything like KB fans will feel extremely angry and let down and 3. A gamble that I honestly believe many fans dont want the club to take especially given LY has had success in much shorter time given to KB. 4. There is strong argument that LY deserved longer because he was working exceptionally well given the mess he took over.

please do NOT recall Glenn. Glenn has been exceptional repeatedly for the club over a long period but I honestly think we have a couple of better fit keepers now. Glenn is still exceptional I just prefer his replacements.
It seems a lot of folk on this forum know a lot about the new manager and how he is sure to fail.I think he was chosen because the owners wanted someone who is "DATA" driven which seemed their main focus on the owners recent forum when discussing the Gillingham game.

BUT this is exactly why people on here "know a lot" because that data driven model went so horribly wrong last time and on paper (data driven) is ME any better than KB? I doubt its anything personal against ME (it certainly isn't from me and of course I want him to be the biggest success the club has ever had in management).

Does a data driven approach deal with the interpersonal skills, man management etc.? There is far more to managing a football club than the data managers get fed by these analysts. Lewis Young has the backing of the players and he was backed by the fans too. The club have taken that away - what reaction did you expect?

Ellery Balcome has performed well the last few games and David Robson has also been decent (albeit his loan runs out in January). I think having Morris around might be handy for the dressing room even if he doesn't play as much. The only other option we have is Addai

Why do we need 4 keepers?
One of those (Robson) won't be at the club after January and I have heard suggestions that Addai might be going out on loan
Well, yesterday was no ordinary Sunday. Losing and gaining a manager on the same day! Have to admit I’m very surprised in the appointment of Etherington. Thought we would have gone for a more experienced manager considering how poor Betsy was.
That said, all us fans should get behind the new manager and I wish him good luck.

I don't think Etherington is being written off. It's more 1) the way Lewis Young has been treated - unceremoniously booted out of the club after all he's done for us, and 2) the owners have gone for ANOTHER U-23 coach, when the last one they got in was an unmitigated disaster.
I make this six rookie managers in a row now, seven if you count Lewis as interim manager. And it seems Etherington got the job because he likes the 'data-driven approach'. FML. The owners still don't have a clue about L2 football, nor does our esteemed DoF. Since he came in, we've hit the bottom of the league, and sacked two managers. What a stellar job he's done so far.
I will back Etherington and Davies as they are in charge now. I just hope they know what they've let themselves in for.

If Robson has his loan extended, then I imagine Morris will extend his loan at Gillingham, and we will loan out Corey to gain experience. Balcombe will remain as our #1.
If Robson goes back to Hull, we would have Balcombe with Corey as back-up, OR we will loan him out and Morris will return as back-up keeper. We still have Roshan Greensall on the books too.
Whatever happens, Balcombe and Robson will be gone in the summer as they are only here on loan. Whether ME keeps any of our remaining three keepers or brings in new blood, time will tell.
I would love to see Glenn back here, as #2 keeper/goalie coach. I would also love to see Kwesi come back next season, but with our current strike force, I sadly don't see that happening.

"Data driven" and "recovering gambling addict" do not sound like a good mix when considering that gambling odds are data and statistic driven. I'm hoping that he's not gambled in any way for many years (one day at a time, of course) and that he received the help to understand any underlying issues that may have led him down that path. If so, I offer a tentative welcome. At the moment my main problem is that he isn't Lewis Young and that LY appears to have been treated shabbily. Etherington isn't responsible for that. The other irritation is how the heĺl is anyone meant to chant 'Matthew Etherington's Red Army' withòut dropping a few syllables.

There was always a difficult decision to take regarding Lewis, I liked him a lot but it's incredibly early for him in his coaching/managing career, I could have gone either way on that in terms of him getting the job here permanently but that's fair enough, it's a good thing people want to champion his cause and good luck to them and good luck to Lewis if he lands somewhere else straight away and starts massively proving us wrong.
What I don't think is that great though is starting to slag off another guy before he even walks in the door, that's a new thing that's starting to creep into fan culture that I've not seen before. It's not good for Crawley because the level we are at we often will have names come here who are not very well known, who had heard of Dermot Drummy and maybe some Brighton fans may have heard of Richie Barker.
Etherington deserves the backing that we've given any new manager in the past. Starting to invent stuff about him that he is bad like so and so or will do this and that bad thing without giving him any chance at all injects a sourness into the fan base that could seep into support at grounds.
By all means champion Lewis Young but, to do that, it's not necessary to run down Matt Etherington
