Not sure you should be so cynical about “old drones” and be typecasting people like that. It works both ways. Younger fans are always moaning because they only know an instant gratification social media driven world where they can moan about everything as soon as it happens, even if it totally contradicts what they said only minutes earlier. The “old drones” you condemn remember a much better and much more balanced world which is a far better basis on which to try and run a football club and make sensible decisions. Furthermore, any cynical comments will have only been made at times when they were necessary, that is, when the running of the club has needed to be challenged.
I thought it was quite funny JB. I can remember people making the same comments about Chas Majeed at the start....how personable he was, his approach was very refreshing, how everyone should move on and generally how the sun was shining at all angles from his arse. Hey ho.
Yes, I’ve just watched it and it was very encouraging
First off, Preston is a very personable fellow, seems very down to earth and spoke calmly about some potentially new, complicated ideas. Talk is cheap say the usual old critics. Ok but there was a couple of substantial points made.
Debts are due to be cleared very shortly, including debts that have been around a long while. That’s a very big step for the sustainability of the club.
Also Preston noted that as part of the ownership checks, proof was provided of funding to cover the expected losses in the seasons ahead. I think this is reassuring, as was the point that consultants have been hired to give Wagmi the UK football experience and expertise needed while they build it up in-house.
The comments on Yems were spot on. He has overachieved on his budget, him and Erdem overachieved on their recruitment but now we will have higher targets. He didn’t say precisely what the higher budget was and, in my view, I think this is smart. We need to go about our business signing new players without telling everyone money is falling out of our pockets, we need to strike good value for money deals still regardless of higher targets.
The democracy side of his comments I find refreshing. I’ve always hated the lord and serf model of ownership in English football where we as fans just have to quietly take it or leave it from the remote, all powerful owner. Any change to that culture will need thought and wide consultation. The fans council is a good start and the video applications a sign that they want to tap into the energy and positivity of more younger fans, not the old drones who have been making the same cynical points about the club on forums and social media since forever.
I really like he’s already picked up the jokey meme about the hand dryer and wants to encourage that kind of fan humour.
All in all, a useful exercise and I’m looking forward to what is to come more and more

Ha now this is going back to the days before punk but the kids are alright JB, as the old song goes. Particularly at Crawley

I don’t think there is any problem keeping the terrible mistakes of the past in our minds, think I even made that argument at some point early on in this thread.
But that’s different to looking at what the new owners did yesterday and making direct comparisons to the criminals. That crosses a line for me. The new owners deserve much better than that.

Anyway you'd hope that they'd be stricter rules in place to prevent gangsters like the Majeeds being allowed to take control of football clubs again. Also Preston and co. do seem to be interacting with the fans quite a bit and are willing to listen, which is a lot more helpful when trying to build a working relationship that what a lot of owners do and surround themselves with yes men

I would say it needs a bit more than a 25 minute YouTube with some gentle questions to reach any conclusions.

I see the comparison is really about how people behave, when they really want something to happen and someone tells them what they want to hear.
In the past, some people - very good, sincere, intelligent, decent people - were just too trusting.

I'd think the fact we did once literally have a gangster running the club would kinda help manage expectations and be more willing to ask the important questions early on whenever there's a change of ownership
